What you see on the Niagara Falls boat ride

Quick answerEvery boat follows the same route: past the American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls first, then straight into the basin of the Horseshoe Falls, where about 90 percent of the river drops. The ride lasts around 20 minutes and the real soaking happens in the final third, inside the Horseshoe curve.

First pass: American and Bridal Veil Falls

Minutes one to seven run parallel to the American Falls, a 300 metre wide wall of white water crashing onto rockfall, with the thin Bridal Veil Falls beside it and the tiny Luna Island in between. This is the photography stretch, the boat is steady and the mist is light, so keep the phone out here.

Into the Horseshoe basin

Then the boat turns into the curve of the Horseshoe Falls and everything changes: the roar doubles, the deck rocks in the churn and warm mist hits like sideways rain. For two to three minutes you sit in the middle of a horseshoe of falling water 50 metres high. Phones go into pockets, this part you just live.

Where to stand on deck

Upper deck bow gets the full experience and the full soak. The starboard side (right, facing forward) faces the falls on the way in on both operators. If you want drier views, the lower deck interior stays workable, but the ponchos exist for a reason, use the hood and keep cameras in a zip bag.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the boat ride?

About 20 minutes dock to dock on both operators, plus the queue and the elevator or funicular down to the river.

Do you get wet on the Niagara boat?

Yes, especially in the Horseshoe basin. The free poncho keeps your core dry, shoes and hair usually take the hit.

Is the ride scary or safe for kids?

It is safe and hugely popular with kids. The deck moves in the basin but railings are high and the whole loop is over in 20 minutes.
